KEF Mentor

Anna Stevens, Psy.D., is an Alutiiq descendent born and raised on Kodiak Island. Upon graduation from Kodiak High School, she attended Gonzaga University and received a bachelor of arts in psychology. She later received a master of arts in teaching from the University of Alaska Southeast. She taught elementary and middle school for five years in Alaska and Washington before returning to school for her master and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, San Francisco. While attending school, she worked as a research assistant for the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) disseminating research findings and organizing a national conference about Historical Trauma among Indigenous peoples. She completed her internship at the UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital’s Trauma Recovery and Rape Treatment Center, an award-winning program providing services to low-income, culturally diverse adults who experience acute and chronic trauma. She received postdoctoral training from the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Center of Seattle and Dr. Marsha Linehan, the creator of DBT. Dr. Stevens now works for the Kodiak Area Native Association as a clinical psychologist. Her experience has included the treatment of children, adolescents, adults, and families with complex problems, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, personality disorders, emotion regulation difficulties, incarceration, trauma, suicide, and substance use. She is particularly interested in trauma and substance use among Native Americans and Alaska Natives and the development of culturally-relevant, strength-based treatments for these populations.

She is grateful for the encouragement and financial help she received from the Koniag Education Foundation, the Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak, and the Indian Health Service throughout her education and training. Through the Mentorship Program, she hopes to carry on the practice of guiding and supporting students. She is happy to share information related to teaching, early childhood development, and psychology; her personal experiences of completing school; how to translate education into marketable skills; and how to stay motivated.

She prefers to meet mentees in person or speak to them by phone. KEF students may contact this mentor at anna.stevens@kanaweb.org and she will send you her direct phone number.
