“I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska where I attended Bartlett High School. In High School I attended a mentorship program in which I had the opportunity to intern at both British Petroleum and the Alaska State Crime Lab. This Mentorship program allowed me to understand what education is necessary to be successful in the industry. I was extremely grateful for such a program to be available to allow me to shape my future. After graduating with the class of 2000, I attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks earning a degree in Biochemistry / Molecular Biology.
After having gained some research experience as an undergraduate, I wanted to continue my education in the field of Nanoscience Chemistry under the direction of Dr. Rafail Khairoutdinov at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. After receiving my Master of Science in 2006, I decided to finish my education with a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Virginia under the direction of Dr. Ian Harrison in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. I have had the privilege to mentor students by teaching chemistry classes, tutoring students, as well as directing students in a research environment. My current plans are to work in industry in the field of chemistry where I hope I can continue to mentor students in such a manner that originally shaped my education.” (Greg Cushing)
